An outdoor power equipment company needed a durable goods label to apply to one of its small engine products. To meet government regulations, the label needed to contain certain warning and identification information. But the surface available on the engine was very limited. In order to fit all of the information required, the text on the label would have had to be so tiny that most buyers couldn’t read it.
This was the challenge faced by one distributor’s client— so the distributor came to Wise, seeking a solution.
Putting Decades of Experience to Work
We put our decades of experience producing durable goods labels to work. Based on our knowledge of substrates, adhesives, and label materials, we engineered a solution that “magically” created the extra space.
We started with a thick, rigid polyester-based material. The rigidity enabled the top of the label to be affixed to the engine, with the bottom flagging off the edge. This allowed the client to use a label large enough to hold all of the legally required information at a readable text size.
After printing, the labels were laminated with a clear film to protect the graphics from gasoline and oil, along with other potential causes of abrasions.
It’s All in the Adhesive
The most significant part of the solution is the adhesive itself. It has the unusual characteristic of reaching its ultimate bond in a short period of time—as little as 90 seconds. Once the release liner is removed and the durable goods label is applied, the label is permanently bonded to the engine and will last for the life of the equipment.
So what do you when the printed label needs to be larger than the product you’re adhering to? You get creative and create a solution where there wasn’t one before.
