If you look up “unfriendly labeling surface” in the dictionary, you are likely to find “tire labels.” These products are covered in contaminants such as the silicone release liner, outgassing, dirt, and grime. Not to mention their irregularly textured surfaces. Yet, manufacturers require that these labels stay affixed.
How long do tire labels need to stay in place? Long enough to allow the tires to be tracked through manufacturing, retreading, and distribution. If the wrong labels are used, they can swell and peel away from the tire, resulting in loss of tracking and brand recognition. In other words, not only are you asking tire labels to do a Herculean job, but you are asking them to do it over a long period of time.
Tire labels must also stay white and readable against the black rubber of the tire. This raises additional challenges since the rubber compounds in the treads tend to migrate through the label and cause unsightly stains.
A ‘Herculean’ Solution
What is the solution? This application requires specialized labels made of a complex composite comprised of the following:
- Heavy coat weight of aggressive adhesive.
- Face stock that stays white, with no rubber migration.
- Film barrier that protects the face stock from oils and other contaminants.
At Wise, we offer two products that meet these requirements: a polypropylene face stock and a thermal-printable paper face stock with film barrier. With either solution, the labels stay white, with no rubber migration, and yet stay affixed and easily removable before use. The stock is thermal transfer, printable in-house at the customer’s location so they can manage their own stock. (Does your customer need an “all-in-one” solution? We sell Zebra printers and ribbons, too!)

As an added benefit, our tire labeling solutions are available with RFID chips. With RFID, a tiny transmitter is built into the label that allows your customer to use a handheld device to read critical product faster and more accurately, even from a distance. This makes product identification and inventory tracking a breeze.
Wise offers similar solutions that can be used in any automotive, vehicle, or EV battery applications.
