Looking to expand your portfolio? Don’t forget about cut sheet applications. From invoices and statements to pads and multi-part forms, cut-sheet applications are highly profitable. Every business needs them, and they tend to be print annuities, which means they repeat month after month with little maintenance required. Once you sell into the account, it tends to be locked in business. You maintain the relationship, and the sales recur month after month, year after year.
Cut-sheet applications should be in the toolkit of every print distributor.
Small Businesses and Cut Sheet Go Hand in Hand
If you can sell into large companies, great! But cut sheet applications also give you an entry point into an important market that print distributors often overlook: small and mid-sized businesses. While large companies get all the glory, there are millions of small businesses that need printed forms, too. The volumes of small and mid-sized businesses may be smaller, but there are millions of them. Plus, they tend to be higher than average users of printed forms.
Why are smaller businesses more likely to use printed forms?
- They purchase in smaller volumes.
- They have smaller budgets and tend to have little or no IT support, making them less likely to have made the full transition to digital forms.
- They tend to fall into market verticals that are higher than average users of printed forms.
Examples include automotive, home services, small healthcare providers, and nonprofits, which by nature of their size or other attributes are more likely to use print. Small and mid-sized businesses and cut sheet applications go hand in hand.
Two Vertical Market Examples
Let’s take the example of automotive firms. This vertical has many shops, such as repair shops and automotive detail shops, whose business models are less suited to digital forms. This is not just because of their size, but because of the type of work they do. Automotive technicians are often working in environments with dirt and grease. They are also mobile, moving about the shop. These two factors make printed forms a more practical solution than digital forms.

The healthcare market is another example. In healthcare, forms must be accessible to every patient, regardless of digital literacy or comfort level. Even if they offer digital forms, most healthcare providers offer printed forms, as well. Smaller, privately owned medical practices, including specialty practices such as nurse practitioners and acupuncturists, use forms in a lower volumes that are perfect for cut-sheet equipment.
