Let’s look at one of the out-of-the-box solutions we developed for a distributor selling into the fast-growing manufacturing and distribution marketplace.
New Warehouse, New Inventory Challenges
A regional distribution company had been using the same barcode inventory system for several years. The system included unique barcodes that matched up to the inventory part number on each product. Each month, warehouse personnel would scan the barcodes to quickly take a cycle count inventory.
The end customer was growing, and it soon moved to a new warehouse. The warehouse gave the company the space it needed, but now the shelving was three racks high rather than two racks high. The barcode scanners could no longer read the labels on the third rack.
The client needed to purchase new readers with a longer range, but since they had just invested in the new warehouse, buying new scanners would have to wait. The client reached out to their current print supplier for help. Unfortunately, no matter what they tried, that supplier couldn’t come up with a workaround to get the scanners to read the labels now higher up on the racks.
The distributor approached Wise about coming up with a solution.
Our team went to work. We have decades of experience in the design of warehouse and distribution labels, so it wasn’t long before the distributor was testing a new design that would be easier for the barcode scanner to read.
Creative Interim Workaround
The new, approved design has an incremental jumbo number that is easier for the barcode scanner to read at a distance. Even if the scanner can’t read the number, that number is highly visible, so the warehouse personnel can key it in manually. This solution has allowed the client to continue operating efficiently until it is able to invest in new, longer-range barcode scanners.
In this case, the distribution company had an immediate problem that was costing it time and money. By working with Wise, the distributor was able to offer the customers a solution that kept the company running profitably. Now that distributor is even more deeply entrenched into the account and poised to significantly grow their business.
