Case Study

Placard and Tote Labels

The Problem

Manufacturers and distributors of large goods, such as auto and medical equipment, often use returnable containers to ship their products. Once delivered, the container  is returned to be refilled and used again.

To affix the label to the difficult surface of the totes, the adhesive needs to be extremely aggressive. If the employee tries to replace those labels with new ones, the  labels tear and shred. Even if the label is removed, it leaves behind a sticky residue. Over time, dirt and grime accumulate where the label had been applied, rendering  that surface difficult or impossible to re-label.

Many companies “solve” this problem by applying new labels on top each other. Over time, those labels pile up. The result?

  • The surface becomes lumpy and uneven, making over-labeling more difficult.
  • Bins start to look shabby.
  • Labels become hard to read.
  • Bins project an image of poor quality.
  • The company’s brand image suffers.

The Solution

Wise has two solutions:

  1. Specially formulated dry-edge film labels with removable adhesives.  Specially formulated substrate allows the label to remain firmly affixed to the container while in transit but lifts off cleanly when removed. An un-gummed (dry) edge creates a tab along one side that allows the employee to remove label quickly and easily.
  2. “Placard” labels.  These labels are permanently affixed to the tote but over- laminated with a silicone-coated film (or release layer) to render the labeling surface reusable, no matter what kind of label you apply on top. This approach allows you to place any low-cost label on top of the permanently affixed under-layer, then remove it easily and cleanly at a later time.

The Results

Reusable containers remain clean and professional, no matter how many times they  are reused. Employees save time and frustration simply removing the old label or the over-layer and replacing it with a new one. Labels are always readable, while you continually project a quality brand image.
